Guide to Driving In Fiji

A Tourist’s Guide to Driving in Fiji

Driving can be an excellent way of touring and capturing the scenic beauty of our country. There are 2 major Islands in the country – Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Viti Levu has the largest road network and therefore has the majority of the highways. Most of the highways are sealed, though potholes are a common occurrence on these roads. Driving is on the left of the road. All the road signs are in English and there are no motorways/freeways in Fiji.

Speed Limits

Highways – 80km/h

City/Towns – 50km/h

Road Rules

·         Do not drink and drive

·         Wear seat belt at all times while driving

·         Follow all traffic signs and road rules

·         Do not use mobile devices while driving

Traffic Cameras

There are speed cameras located along the Queen’s Highway (highway connecting Suva and Nadi) and in certain areas around Suva. Not all cameras are online at any given time, but you’ll never know which ones are. Also watch out for red-light cameras in major parts of Suva.

Other Considerations

Always carry your driving license with you, and preferably your passport as well. There are no toll booths in Fiji. Be careful of animals, villagers and speed bumps when driving. Speed bumps are common on highways near villages. Apart from speed cameras, there are police units frequently conducting speed checks along the highways, so stay within the speed limits. Try to avoid driving at nights as some of the roads may not have proper markings and reflectors. If you do have to drive at night, just GO SLOW and you should not have any problems. You should also be wary of other drivers who might not be so considerate and may display some silly driving behaviors, especially taxi drivers.  Always keep your distance and practice defensive driving.

If you have any clarifications, contact the Fiji Land Transport Authority or you can contact us if you need information on road rules or driving requirements.

Follow the road rules and drive slow, and you should not have any problems while driving in Fiji.
